A Dolls erectHenrik Ibsen was born in 1828 on the coast of Norway into a centre of attentionclass family. When he was 6 years of age, due to financial loss, hisfamily were forced to move to a smaller house in the country and hiseducation was disruppted. Ibsen had to act as an apprentice and studyin the evening this alienated him from his family and he was never toreunite with them. In 1849 his first play was published and was adisaster. Ibsen then acquired a job as hammy Authorat the Norwegian Theatre which included all parts of the studyproduction directing, designing sets and costumes as well as financialand business enterprise aspects. At this point in time, Ibsen was successful aslight comedy, romanticism and melodrama were the main subjects hewrote about. By 1860 he was disillusioned with those and wanted todeal with authentic issues about everyday life in society, which his middleclass audience could relate to. Being a socialist, Ibsens realisticfor of writing made his audiences commemorate and even examine their ownlifes this made his realistic plays extremely successful with thepublic but the critics thought other wise. In 1877 The Pillars of guild was his naturalistic play but still contained a happy ending.Then only two years later A Dolls House had a totally differentending which embraced womens rights and was revolutionary causing astir throughout Europe. Most of Ibsens realistic plays were based onevents that had happened in his own life.The style at the time was Romanticism and melodrama this genre oftheatre was known as The Well Made Play. The plays in this eraconsisted of your typical goodies vs. baddies battles which resultedin the goodies winning nearly all the time. As I stated earlier onIbsen wanted to move onward from this style and on to a different on. Ibsen helped develop a new genre of theatre along with Shaw calledNaturalistic. This type of drama was classed as The new theatrewhich dealt with real life situations, morals and social issues. Somecritics found this style of drama scandalous which dented itspopularity in the early stages. The first play to fuss positiveremarks from the critics was Ibsens play A Dolls House.
